Young people who enjoy creating characters, telling stories, and immersing themselves in a role will delight in this class with an emphasis on play! This dynamic class also teaches focus, empathy, and commitment.

Acting and Improv Prep starts with a focus on improvisational comedy skills like trusting your instincts and working cooperatively with a team. Then as the session continues, those skills are applied to scripted scene work, where students will expand their understanding of acting through giving life and truth to a character, investing in the character’s given circumstances, and using acting concepts like objectives/obstacles/tactics. At the end of the session, students will share their favorite parts of these two branches of theatre for a small audience of friends and family. Spring: The Actor's Process (Code 111)

Calendar Feb 7, 2024 at 5:15 pm, runs for 12 weeks

Dates/Time: Wednesdays (Feb. 7 to May 8; no class Apr. 3 and Apr. 10) from 5:15PM to 6:15PM

Location: In person at SPARC

Grades: 8th to 12th

How does an actor embody a character? How do they bring life and truth to a story? Every actor has their own approach to these questions. In The Actor’s Process, young people will explore a series of foundational exercises designed to help them discover the methods that work for them as an actor. This class will start with understanding the world of a play and developing curiosity about its characters. Young people will next experiment with using their voice, body, and mind to step into a character. Finally, students will be paired with a scene partner. Through this introduction to scene work, actors will practice using vocal and physical expression to convey emotion, react to their partner, and tell a convincing story. This class will also reinforce theatrical principles like vocabulary, staging, and memorization. At the end of the session, actors will share their scenes for a small audience of friends and family. The Actor’s Process is designed for all levels of experience in acting.

Spring Storycraft (Code 111)

$360

with Elle and Laine

Calendar Feb 10, 2024 at 11:45 am, runs for 12 weeks

Dates/Time: Saturdays (Feb. 10 to May 4, no class Apr. 6) from 11:45AM to 12:45PM

Grades: 6th to 8th

Create a piece of original theatre in this unique class! Youth will embark on an exploratory process where they’ll discover how conversation, improvisation, music, and movement come together to tell a story. Storycraft is centered on amplifying young people’s distinctive opinions and experiences, building meaningful connections, and working to achieve a goal. This class is meant to develop a young person’s process of creating and presenting a story. In drawing connections between personal experiences and dramatization, youth will practice brainstorming, problem-solving, and collaborating to create one original work of theatre as a class. Perhaps most importantly, students will learn to respect and honor the stories of others as well as their own. Youth will share their original piece of theatre for a small audience of friends and family at the end of the session. Because this class creates a unique performance piece with each new session, this class can be taken more than once with fresh lessons and takeaways each time.
